Opening Day!! Southern Saskatchewan Fishing
Opening day, Southern Saskatchewan fishing, it just doesnt get better than that, or does it? Well after the weatherman did his best to chase people away Saturday morning , calm, clear sunny day. For the dedicated fishing was awsome, catching was typical spring fishing, slow bite. Not bad reports from a few people that fished Diefenbaker for rainbows, actually had some that did really well and others who just caught one or two but all wouldnt trade the week end for anything. Walleye fishing was great and for those who used ultra sensitive rods, light line and up to 1/8 oz jigs with a super slow presentation catching was not all that bad. Fair reports from Pelican Pt, Echo lake and of course the Bays on Diefenbaker.
Im heading north to set out bear baits this week end and plan to hunt the week of the long week end in May so Ill keep you posted. Should be a great time Im taking my 12 year old grandson on his first bear hunt and for that matter his fisrt hunt ever so am really looking forward to that. Ill give you the blow by blow after that andas far as fishing we intend to to at least weekly reports alon with lots of tips.

Moose Mountains
buckmaster writes "Hello all members, I am a new member and will try to keep an updated record on some of the current events that are happening around the Moose Mountains. For those of you who have not heard of the Moose Mountains, we are located in the south eastern corner of Saskatchewan. I have recently wrapped up the annual sausage festival, succesfully casing a whitetail buck, rough scoring 173 gross. Spending many days on foot I only encountered one other hunter in the area on foot. On other occasions I noticed a handful of hunters who would rather drive the fringe area in quest of a monster buck. Speaking with the local residents and hunters, it has been determined once again that hunting on foot is the key to a trophy whitetail deer in this area. However, several 150 class bucks where taken from roadside vantage points. Hunting the 2004 rifle season required patience and a high level of awarness as the weather was mild with little or no snow cover on the ground. The rut was in full swing on opening day and continued through until the middle of the last week. Rattling proved to be effective, however with the mild weather and plenty of feed in the bush, the does were not grouping up. With smaller concentrations of animals a larger hunting area had to be covered unless preseason scouting was done.(Probably the reason for so many vehicles, or is it just laziness?) Buckmaster "

Ice Fishing Update
Wow, just when we thought ice fishing in southern Saskatchewan would never turn on customers are starting to tell success stories. Most of the winter pike fishing has been fairly consistent. Pike from three to ten pounds are fairly common with just enough fifteen to twenty pounders to make life interesting. It seems like the inability to mover around the QuAppelle and Last Mountain lakes is the biggest inhibitor to better catches. Walleye are still Walleye slow catching in the winter. First ice this winter did not bring great success and now were all waiting for March fishing to turn on. The greatest boon to ice fishing is the Aqua Vu underwater cameras. Next time your perch fishing and the perch come to your bait but will not bite try tapping your rod tip once, just lightly. One of our customers said that if he jigged the lure the fish scattered but if he lightly tapped the rod they grabbed the bait. Now here is the rub they mouthed the bait so lightly that his micro light rod did not move but he saw the action on the camera and made the catch. Sorry fish that’s technology or life on the top of the food chain. Wayne Tumack , Pres of Bite Me Jigs has come out with a supper variety of T Tot type jigs, there hot.

A Saskatchewan Elk Hunt
I've just completed a week with three friends archery hunting Elk in the Northern Forest of Saskatchewan. This season the forest is extremely wet with even the smallest creek still running and previously dry beaver floods now reallly flooded. One morning my friend and I worked our way accross a drainedge which meant walking through waist high grass, ankle deep water over three small beaver dams just to get a hundred yards. We set up and I called for a hour and got no response. The next plan was to follow a game trail up out of the creek bank , this led up up onto a 45x80 yard meadow. As the trail dispearse in this meadow I picked on of the solo trails and slowly followed it into the bush. We has only gone about 80 yards when I bumped a cow. I immediately froze and cow called to settle her down. My friend was about 15 yards behind me and while he heard the animal run he couldn't see it for the trees. We stood motionless and I made about three more calls in the next three or four minutes. All of a sudden I saw an elk moving towards me from my fiends right, I saw him draw his bow but not shoot, I cow called to get the elk to move towards me and open up a shot oppourtunity for him, the Elk moved and I saw it was at least a 4X4 Bull Elk, he stopped no shot, I called he moved closer, still no shot ,I called again this time he stepped out and I could see his head and front legs just then I head my friends bow fire, two quick snaps as the arrow bounced off limbs and heard the arrow smack a tree. The Bull wheeled back about 60 yards, I called him back into 30 and then he circled, winded us and the jig was up.
Now all we were left with was some fine track soup and a memory to last a life time. By the way this gets my other friend off the hook for missing a 12 yd broadside shot a few years ago, we now have fresher story to question, with an opening line of " How the heck could you ever miss that ". If your a bow hunter you know the answer.

Water Foul Hunting
2004 promises to be one of the better seasons for ducks and geese with water levels up and a good breeding season. The only down side right at this time is there has been little harvest completed and with the cool wet weather a lot of fields are not ready to swath. Those great field shoots are a couple of weeks off until our farmers can get rolling. I have heard that the south west has a fair start on the harvest but I know the east and north centeral are well behind but thats farming.

Summer Fishing Wraps Up in Saskatchewan
Fishing around Regina this past summer would have to be rated as super. This has been one of the coolest and rainy summers in recent history but overall walleye fishing has been steady in the QuAppelle lakes and really quite good in last mountain. The Walleye tournament over the Labor Day Weekend at Fort Quappelle saw a walleye bite not unlike the spring with anglers jigging with an open bail and at the slightest pick up letting the line go for up to ten seconds before trying to set the hook. From all reports the Last Mountain walleye Classic at Rowans Ravine was a great success with a solid bite the entire weekend. In the next few weeks a lot of fishermen hang it up and a lot really look forward to great fishing. There is no doubt that the fall bite can be very agressive.
Now that the tournaments are over for this part of the Province there will be a lot more freedom of information as to where the hot spots are. Its amazing how many really good walleye anglers don't seem to catch a lot of fish in the regular hot spots until the tournaments, seems like a lot of cloak and daggers work.

June Fishing Update
The first few days of June have passed and the fishing in the lakes around Regina have started to light up. Echo & Pasqua have excellent walleye fishing with Mission a close second. Last Mountain lake, Pelican point has had a few great bites, Regina Beach Point the same, The south flats since this heavy rain has become very muddy and the water is still really cool for this time of year and as a result fishing is off to what it normally is. Just had a canoeist in to the store(GNRRA) who had a blast with grayling on the Clearwater river. It's neet to hear these stories first hand because the anglers are still so pumped about the experience. Lakes along the Chirchhill River system are super for Walleye and Pike.

Fishing update week of Feb 15th.
Echo, Pasqua Lakes, Good Katepwa better. Last mountain Good.
Week end fishing reports were good. Lots of perch caught but very few jumbo size. As always pike add lots of excitement with come giants
getting away. As one angler reported he hooked onto a pike and when his friend saw it go past the hole he described it as large as a railway tie. Unfortunately the next time it passed the hole it took a look at my friends face which scared it and it took off with my hook and line.
Travel on the QuAppelle lakes better as more traffic creates better trails, 4x4 country. North end of Last Mountain not too bad with snow machines on Regina Beach area.
Saw a sign the other day that said: Look out for No. 1 and don't step in No. 2!!
